Small bales are still used extensively on farms for feeding animals that are housed in the barn and for animals that require special feeding.

Small hay bales in equestrian use is well known as horses should only be fed quality hay. Round bales are often of lesser quality having been exposed to weather making the outer layers unsuitable for horses due to the the dust they collect thus affecting the respiratory tract of a horse, causesing serious problems especially when horses are worked. Also, hay has to be limited when conditioning horses for racing, eventing etc. at which time you need the horse to eat more hard concentrates.

Dairy cows are often housed in the barn and they too need a measured amount of hay for feeding along with their concentrates for maximum milk yields.

Sheep are best fed on small bales as it is less wasteful.! You can easily justify the purchase of a Netherexe system on the amount you save on waste hay! Also, small bales can be fed on the ground so that hay seed and hay don't get tangleed into the fleece of the sheep.

Goats too will benefit from being fed on the small bales for the same reasons as dairy cows and to eliminate wasted hay.
